Fichtrorama 1 on the façade of Payot Sion. Conceived in the form of a myriorama, this work is closely linked to nature, plants and travel.
Nineteenth-century children enjoyed constructing landscapes by assembling myriorama cards as they wished. The cards could be put together in any order to create a myriad of panoramas.
To take over Payot's long billboard, Mathias Forbach decided to create his own myriorama and invite passers-by on an imaginary journey.
Each card features a different plant against a background that is sometimes desert, sometimes swamp, sometimes verdant.
Alternating between fantasy and realism, these subjects echo memories of the artist's travels.
A South African landscape, for example, is brought face to face with an aquatic view of the Philippines.
The static nature of the sites represented is matched by the loosely aligned cards and the dynamism of the background.
Pedestrians seem to be called upon to reorganise the maps.
Although they can't manipulate them, they are immersed in a world of exoticism and warmth.
